When it comes to finding a new place to live, we all know there are a laundry list of things to get done before you’re actually comfortable in a new home. From hiring a moving company to decluttering and preparing for a smaller space, you have plenty to worry about. However, if you have the time, take a tour of your new neighborhood, or apartment complex, to scope out what kind of neighbors you may have. This breezy walk can save you a lot of trouble in the long term if you look out for the red flags that, oops, you’ve got bad neighbors.

Excessive noise and activity are, often, one of the most telltale signs that you have inconsiderate neighbors. After all, a person who knows that someone lives downstairs and still makes noise at 2 AM has to know what they’re doing, right? An exceptionally noisy neighbor may blast loud music, particularly at late or early hours, throw large parties on the weekdays, or allow their dogs to be just as noisy and disruptive. A noisy neighbor can greatly disturb your sleep patterns and daily life.

Other signs of a bad neighbor include unfriendliness, even downright being rude at every interaction. Some people see those neighbors that wave and say hello as polite and those who don’t as the opposite, but a quiet neighborhood is just fine for many people. Look for those neighbors that glare when kids play, make comments about alternative lifestyles, or complain about what people do on their lawn. Especially if you have kids or plan a garden for your front lawn, this is a glaring red flag that you have bad neighbors.

Another sign that you may have bad neighbors is an unkempt yard and home. This is much more than a lawn that needs a mowing or kids’ toys on the porch. An unkempt home or yard that may keep you away from the neighborhood is in disrepair or has garbage or clutter in the yard or driveway. These are neglectful neighbors, and may not be as careful about your property. Taking a tour of the neighborhood can help you spot these neglectful neighbors before you move in.

As you search for homes or two bedroom apartments in downtown in Los Angeles, take some time from your schedule to tour the neighborhood and keep an eye out for all the telltale signs of a bad neighborhood or bad neighbors. Even if you can’t find another place to live, you can prepare yourself for the trials and tribulations that come with dealing with bad neighbors.
