There are those world-famous destinations like Paris, New York, Hawaii, etc. But there’s more to traveling than hitting the beaten path over and over again. In 2024, we think it’s time to see what else is there and give some lesser-known destinations a shot. And you can start from the Middle East and West Asia!

Petra, Jordan

Jordan's rose-red city of Petra is a masterpiece of prehistoric architectural and mechanical brilliance. It provides a window into the clever Nabataean civilization, renowned for their capacity to harness water in the desert, and is carved straight into the vivid red sandstone cliffs.

Entering through the Siq, a slender canyon rimmed by over 80-meter-tall cliffs, visitors are immediately greeted with the striking vista of Al-Khazneh, or the Treasury. Further investigation shows a city of tombs, temples, and a theater built in the manner of the Roman Empire, all of which attest to Petra's importance as a trading center throughout history.

For those who are daring, the early morning hike up to the Monastery is worthwhile since it offers sweeping vistas of the valley below.

Istanbul, Turkey

This is a well-known travel destination beloved by all tourists. Istanbul is a cultural powerhouse that spans both Europe and Asia over the Bosphorus Strait, with a population as diverse as its architecture.

If you have only a few days in Istanbul, we recommend checking out significant structures in Sultanahmet's old neighborhood, like the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, which is well-known for its intricate Iznik tiles. Also, the Spice Bazaar is a wonderful place to wander around and take in Istanbul's energy.

The profusion of colors, sounds, and scents entices many tourists to indulge in authentic Turkish cuisine and robust Turkish coffee. Additionally, after dark, be sure to check out the vibrant nightlife and see how well Istanbul mixes modern and traditional. Plus, Istanbul is one of the safest cities for travelers, even solo ones, so don’t worry about any safety concerns

AlUla, Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is opening up to the world, and the world has so many amazing things to see there, starting with AlUla. This ancient city, once a center of trade and culture, is home to Hegra, Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage site.

The recently developed AlUla Saudi Arabia museum offers an immersive experience of the region's rich history and culture, showcasing well-preserved Nabatean tombs alongside contemporary art installations. The museum integrates the past with the present, allowing visitors to engage with interactive exhibits that narrate the stories of ancient civilizations.

Additionally, AlUla's natural beauty and unique landmarks, like the mirrored Maraya Concert Hall, provide countless opportunities for exploration and photography, making it a must-visit for both history buffs and nature lovers.

Beirut, Lebanon

The capital city of Lebanon is Beirut, which attracts visitors to the Middle East with its intriguing blend of modernity, culture, and history. Often referred to as the "Paris of the Middle East," Beirut's thriving cultural scene, which includes theaters, art galleries, and festivals, demonstrates the city's creative spirit and resiliency despite its troubled past.

Explore the city's past at the National Museum of Beirut, which is home to a large collection of archeological relics, or take in some modern Lebanese art at the Beirut Art Center. And we can’t mention Lebanon without talking about their amazing food. One thing is for sure, you won’t leave Beirut with an empty stomach.

Muscat, Oman

So far, we established that West Asia is very successful in mixing old and new, and Oman is another example of this attractive blend. Encircled by untamed mountains and the vast Arabian Sea, the city exhibits its rich Islamic legacy through architectural wonders such as the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, which is renowned for its massive hand-tufted carpet and a magnificent chandelier made of Swarovski crystals.

The immaculate beaches of Muscat provide the ideal haven for anyone seeking a peaceful getaway. In the meantime, the busy Muttrah Souk, where traders sell gold, fragrant incense, and traditional fabrics, offers a vibrant look into Omani culture. Those looking for relaxation can enjoy shopping and spas, while more adventurous visitors must book a snorkeling tour and go looking for dolphins.

You will realize the world's true beauty and diversity after visiting any of these nations. You and your fellow tourists will have an entirely new list of things that you really must see because this area has so much more to offer.
