Yoga classes - at home or in a group?
Where is it better to practice yoga: go to the nearest yoga studio near work or home at a convenient time or look for a good teacher and be ready to travel to him at the other end of the city? Or maybe open YouTube or buy a cool book, spread out a mat at home and practice on your own?
Let's consider the advantages and disadvantages of these options.
Yoga is, first of all, an individual practice and a person's desire to direct energy to self-development. And home practice has a lot of advantages:
Setting your own goals
Self-motivation
Convenient time for classes
Your own rhythm
You can relax and be more relaxed
Possibility to experiment with the time of performing asanas
The ability to fully concentrate on yourself, without mixing with the energy of other people.
But how can you determine the success of individual practice? Is the book leading you in the right direction, are you reading it correctly and understanding it, is this what the author or the teacher on YouTube meant?
You need to know that if a person practices only at home, he begins to "stew in his own juice" and does not receive new keys for personal development. Independent practices at home without personal contact with the Teacher can lead to nowhere at best.
An obligatory part of the concept of yoga is the direct transfer of knowledge from the Teacher to the student, who will motivate and guide on the path of yoga. This is stated in all ancient treatises.
In the conditions of the city, classes with the Teacher are classic group practices in the studio, where the teacher shows asanas or guides with his voice; Mysore Ashtanga yoga classes, where each student performs a fixed sequence in his own rhythm under the supervision of the Teacher; or individual classes with the Teacher.
Such classes have a number of advantages:
The studio already has everything you need for a comfortable practice (mats, props, atmosphere, discipline).
There is a teacher who builds a safe practice and helps in its correct development.
In a group, you involuntarily align yourself with the general rhythm and immerse yourself in the flow.
You are always under the supervision of a teacher who helps you correct mistakes, answers questions, and monitors your progress.
Communication and joint practice in a group creates a common energy field that feeds all those involved. Therefore, many asanas are worked out better in a group.
The subscription can be an additional motivation not to step back once again :)
A relative disadvantage of group classes is that the group includes people with their own health and character characteristics. And you need to understand that the teacher creates a practice for the majority, with slight variations in difficulty or adaptation. And much, of course, depends on the number of people in the group class. Such classes may not meet your expectations and the best thing to do is to try another group or teacher.
Also, to develop in yoga, it is advisable to practice more than twice a week, which can be expensive or inconvenient when practicing in a studio.
Let's summarize. It is important to be able to balance and not go to extremes. You need to find your Teacher, practice with him, trust. But do not forget about independent practice at home, but not instead of a group, but together, i.e. additionally :)
